If you are of working age and still in the work force, you know how frustrating some norms and processes can be. Instead of accepting “its the way we’ve always done it“, start asking WHY! You keep asking why until it become clear why something is the way it is. Sometimes the reasons go back decades. Sometimes it because somebody upstream from you need a report back in 1998, and then it was assumed the report was now needed on a bi-weekly basis.
Being a change agent (or process improvement specialist) is much like how the water has carved the rocks smooth in the above picture, it may take time to get to the answer. Keep asking why, why, why. If your organization has the budget it is a good place to start. If not, do it within your own office or department. Do a Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) project. Start small and work your way up.
I’m finished rambling. Be the change agent!
